I'm pretty sure the "robots" were supposed to be alive. So when they died in that big battle from the movie, they actually died, like for real.

Actually the show didn't end with the movie. After the movie, the cartoon had 3 final episodes titled Rebirth Parts 1-3.

I actually did some research about the Go-Bots because I wanted to make a joke about them in this entry. But I couldn't find a single Go-Bots fan page online. That's how lame they were, those Go-Bots.
