They seem like an optimal solution to recording not just your old vhs tapes, if you already have a vhs player, but also a means of recording television programming directly to a hard drive. For some reason no one seems to sell them though?

Re: Sony Makes Backing Up to DVD a Snap

The DVD that this device burn can play with any regular dvd player? I have a lot of VHS tape wanted to convert, so just simply connect my old VCR to that device with those red, white & yellow cable isn't it? What about if connect TV to this device? Will it record TV program directly?

Re: Sony Makes Backing Up to DVD a Snap

I have the sony VRD-MC5 recorder and would like to know how to record from my cable company dvr to the sony VRD-MC5. It connects to any camcorder and easily lets you transfer the information on the tape to DVD format. You can add a scene marker every 5 10 or 15 minutes for quick scanning during playback. It is almost like making a tape copy, but you do have to finalize the DVD for playback at the end. The little screen has really easy menus to follow. It is idiot proof. I have also used it to copy DVR recordings onto DVD for future viewing.
If you have a Sony camcorder with a DV output, the DVDIRECT talks to the camcorder and controls it with automatically rewinding etc.
It is nearly idiot proof. Great product. I am loving this thing.
When you look at the cost of tape to DVD transfer, this is a bargain, and really so easy to use yourself.

Re: Sony Makes Backing Up to DVD a Snap

Purchased this recorder from this site and am thrilled. Works like a charm. For anybody who had been doing dvd recording or uses as a backup for recording sessions, this machine works great. Does not have turner or will not playback as a source machine, but as a stand-alone recorder, it is what I have been searching for. Have used for 5 remote sessions which require 6 dvd's per session (as SP speed), not one hiccup.... pre-format dvd (takes about 1 minute) - hit record and you're recording. Hit record and you've paused. If you need chapter points, hit stop, then record again and you're off. Finalizing takes about the same as any other recorder I've used. I have just ordered three more.

Re: Sony Makes Backing Up to DVD a Snap

This unit will allow you to back-up video from an HD camcorder. If your camcorder records in the AVCHD HDD format you can transfer the video on to disc. The VRD-MC5 handles up to to 1080i and stores the information in H.264 format on a DVD for use in most Bluray players.
